Stopover

For tonight, we chose a rather unusual place to stay: right next to the shopping center in Hanstholm, where the owner provides part of the car park for motorhomes to stay overnight completely free of charge. The place itself certainly isn't a scenic highlight. You park on a flat, paved area directly beside the shopping center, which looks a little dated overall. But the whole setup is wonderfully straightforward – arrive, park for the night and continue your journey the next morning, all without paying anything. There is no electricity and no fresh water or waste disposal. Shopping, on the other hand, couldn't be easier. There is a discount supermarket in the center where you can stock up on supplies between 7 am and 9 pm. The place doesn't seem to be much of a secret among motorhome travellers anymore. By the evening, five other campers had joined us. Reviews online also describe it as a quiet and practical place to spend the night. Another advantage mentioned is that it is somewhat more sheltered than the parking areas down by the harbour. And our own experience confirmed that impression: we had a really peaceful night. Even though there is a road right next to the parking area, we heard virtually no traffic at all. Of course, you don't get the beautiful North Sea views offered by some of the other places around Hanstholm. Instead, you get something that can be just as valuable on a road trip: a simple, official and free place to spend the night, without any unnecessary extras. For a stopover on our way further north towards Skagen, it worked perfectly for us – quiet, uncomplicated and free. Sometimes, that's really all you need.
